Australian Open

The Australian Open is without a doubt the most popular sporting event in the country, even overshadowing the likes of the AFL in sheer patron attendance. This sporting event gathers large crowds and viewers from all over the world, eager to get an up-close and personal view of the court’s excitement.

But who are the stars you need to watch out for when the Australian Open starts in 2017? There are actually quite a few new rising stars in the Australian Open, as well as familiar faces eager to make a comeback.

Women’s Singles

The current line-up for the women’s singles includes familiar faces and new ones looking to strike it big in the Australian Open. While the current line-up of players feels rather empty without Maria Sharapova in light of the recent controversies, there are some fresh new faces setting fire to the court.

Angelique Kerber recently reached the semi-finals, scoring a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Irina Camelia Begu. The German tennis player’s current track record makes her one of the top players to watch out for. It’s too early to predict how her performance will be in the French Open and if she’ll even make it at the Australian Open next year. Her performance against top players is notable, however, and this underdog may just reach the semi-finals.

Fan favourites, such as the Williams sisters, Kristina Mladenovic and Daria Gavrilova, are also making their rounds on the court. The latter two, in particular, will be competing against each other in round three of the current semi-finals.

Predictions and Upsets

Novak Djokovic’s consistent success is almost a guarantee that he’ll make it on the next Australian Open. It’s hard to imagine who can stop his sweep of the game, and there are already predictions that he may win two more majors, including the French Open.

On the other hand, things aren’t looking too well for Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Federer’s recent knee surgery, which is the first in his career, is affecting his performance. The former King of Clay, Nadal’s loss to Djokovic may be what paved the way for the latter’s current unbeatable performance. Nadal may be in a slump now, but that doesn’t mean he’s completely out of the game, though.
