What is Private Lives?

Private Lives is a famous comedy by Noël Coward, first performed in 1930. The play follows divorced couple Elyot Chase and Amanda Prynne, who unexpectedly meet while honeymooning with their new partners. Despite their difficult past, they rekindle their passionate relationship and run away together. The play explores themes of love, marriage, divorce, jealousy and conflict, while using witty dialogue and humour to entertain the audience. Coward also examines the contrast between public behaviour and private emotions, making Private Lives a timeless and influential example of British comedy.

Internationally acclaimed British actor Hugh Bonneville, known for Downton Abbey and Paddington, stars alongside four-time Gold Logie Award-winning Australian actress Lisa McCune in Noël Coward’s sparkling comedy masterpiece, Private Lives. They are joined by Leon Ford, Silver Logie Award-winner Claire van der Boom and multi-Helpmann Award-winning actress Julie Forsyth. The story follows Elyot and Amanda, a divorced couple who, five years after their disastrous marriage, unexpectedly discover they are honeymooning with their new partners in rooms next door to each other. As old feelings resurface, their reunion quickly turns into a hilarious battle of egos, passion and tempers. Packed with witty one-liners, outrageous behaviour and romantic chaos, Private Lives has delighted audiences since its 1930 premiere and features Coward’s beloved song “Someday I’ll Find You.” Directed by acclaimed British director Chris Luscombe, this stylish and hilarious new production brings Coward’s timeless comedy to life for a new generation at the Princess Theatre for a strictly limited four-week season from March 2027.
