FOO FIGHTERS

About

Foo Fighters are set to return to the road in 2024 for their first extended live outing since the tragic passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins in March 2022. The group’s most recent performances came in late 2022 at the transatlantic tribute concerts dedicated to the late, beloved band member.

The upcoming tour includes a string of headlining shows, as well as festival stops at Bonnaroo and Boston Calling.

Fans are hoping that the American rock band will return to Australia in 2024 for a run of national tour dates. Dave Grohl and his band, who last year were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, filled GMHBA Stadium with 30,000 fans in 2022. With any luck, the Foo Fighters will be back to play stadium shows.

Before bringing live music back to the regional city of Geelong, the Foo Fighters were previously in Australia in early 2018 on their Concrete and Gold Tour, in support of their ninth studio album of the same name, playing arenas in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, and Adelaide.

Whenever the next Foo Fighters national tour is announced, you can guarantee The Ticket Merchant will have access to the best tickets. Don’t miss out!

Who Are the Foo Fighters?

The Foo Fighters are an American rock band formed in Seattle, Washington, in 1994. The band was founded by Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl as a one-man project following the dissolution of Nirvana after the death of Kurt Cobain. The Foo Fighters got its name from the UFOs and various aerial phenomena that were reported by Allied aircraft pilots in World War II, which were known collectively as ‘foo fighters’.

Prior to the release of Foo Fighters' 1995 debut album ‘Foo Fighters’, which featured Grohl as the only official member, Grohl recruited bassist Nate Mendel and drummer William Goldsmith, both formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate, as well as Nirvana touring guitarist Pat Smear to complete the lineup.

The band began with performances in Portland, Oregon. Goldsmith quit during the recording of the group's second album, The Colour and the Shape (1997) when most of the drum parts were re-recorded by Grohl himself. Smear's departure followed soon afterwards, though he would rejoin them in 2006.

Hearts, minds and crowds were blown up in January and February 2018 as the 'Fooies' returned to rock stadiums across Australia & New Zealand in support of their ninth studio album ‘Concrete and Gold’.

The rock gods brought in the new year with an epic tour kicking off at Perth’s HBF Park on Saturday, 20 January, before touring Adelaide, Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne. They wrapped up across the ditch at Auckland’s Mt Smart Stadium on Saturday, 3 February. The band was joined at all shows by special guest Weezer, plus a local opener from each city on the tour.

If you missed out on that tour, you’re no doubt pretty keen to hear if the Foo Fighters will be gracing Australian shores with their presence anytime soon. While we don’t have official word yet, we know how much Dave Grohl loves touring down under, so we can only assume they will make it here sooner rather than later.

Will Foo Fighters Be Going on Tour in 2024?

The Foo Fighters had every intention of visiting Australia in 2022. However, the untimely passing of drummer Taylor Hawkins put a pause on those plans, with the band cancelling its Australian and NZ tour.

These dates are yet to be officially rescheduled, leaving many fans to wonder if the band is headed back our way in 2024. The Foo Fighters are currently on tour, with domestic and international dates across the US, Germany, Canada, Japan, and Brazil.

We all know Australia is a fair way to travel, but few acts love our country quite like the Foo Fighters. If anyone’s going to make the trip, it’s Dave Grohl and co. Stay tuned to The Ticket Merchant to be the first to find out when the inevitable Australian tour dates are announced!

Where Will the Foo Fighters Tour?

The Foo Fighters are a stadium band, meaning they’re likely to hit up capital cities that have the capacity for their tens of thousands of fans. In saying that, they did make a special trip all the way out to Australia just to play in Geelong, so our larger regional towns aren’t out of the question!
Based on past tours, when the Foo Fighters do announce Australian dates, they are likely to visit Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth and possibly New Zealand!

Who is Drumming For the Foo Fighters?

From the release of their second studio album, Taylor Hawkins was the official drummer for the Foo Fighters, replacing William Goldsmith. Prior to joining the Foo Fighters, Hawkins was the drummer for a number of other high-profile acts, including Alanis Morissette.

Hawkins was not only the Foo Fighters’ drummer, he also provided backup vocals, guitar and piano to many of their most famous albums. In 2022, Hawkins unexpectedly passed away, which resulted in the band cancelling their concert dates for the rest of the years.

Now, the band is back on the road and is trialling a number of new drummers. It’s likely that upcoming tour dates will feature a rotation of Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron and Angels & Airwaves drummer Atom Willard.

Are the Foo Fighters Releasing New Music?

Yes! Foo Fighters fans rejoice: the band recently announced new and unexpected music in the form of a single and an upcoming album.

The single ‘Rescued’ was the first new release since the passing of Taylor Hawkins and is reminiscent of their earlier work.

The good news doesn’t stop there. In June, the Foo Fighters will release their eleventh studio album, ‘But Here We Are’, which has been touted as a new direction for the band following the death of Hawkins.
