About

Green Day was originally part of the punk scene at the DIY 924 Gilman Street club in Berkeley, California, throughout the 80s. The band's early releases were raw records that were driven by the power of punk rock, an emerging genre that was infused with grunge, made popular at the time by Kurt Cobain's Nirvana. Green Day’s music was produced by independent record label, Lookout! Records.

For much of the band's career, Green Day performed as a trio with drummer Tré Cool. In 1990, he was replaced by John Kiffmeyer prior to the recording of the band's infamous second studio album, ‘Kerplunk (1991)’.

In 1994, their major label debut ‘Dookie’, was released through the larger label, Reprise Records, and became a breakout success - shipping over 10 million copies in the U.S.

In recent times, the band announced they were recording for a new studio album titled ‘Saviours’ with a release date in early 2024. The album is currently being produced by Rob Cavallo, which marks his first album working with the band since ‘¡Tré!’ back in 2012. Prior to the album's release, the band revealed a new song titled ‘1981’ during their live performance at the Festival d'été de Québec on July 16 this year.

With two Grammys for internationally sensational tracks like ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ and ‘American Idiot’, as well as dozens of MTV music awards, the band is one of the definitive voices of punk rock. Green Day is credited alongside fellow legendary punk bands, including Sublime, Bad Religion, The Offspring and Rancid.

Last Green Day Tour in Australia

More than 21 years after Green Day first stepped onto an Australian stage at Brisbane’s Festival Hall, the Californian rockers came back in 2021-2022 for ‘The Hella Mega Tour’. This came in tandem with Green Day's album, ‘Father of All Motherfuckers’, and Weezer's 14th record, ‘Van Weezer’.

$1 from every ticket sold at The Hella Mega Tour festival went towards raising money for the NSW Rural Fire Service and the Country Fire Authority in Victoria. With big gains for Australia’s fire service and thousands of eager punk-lover fans, many are excited to see a Green Day Tour 2024.

FAQs

What Made Green Day So Successful?

Green Day is a Californian punk rock band that infused the raw power of punk with a melodic pop style and lyrics that perfectly captured the angst-ridden restlessness of American teenagers at the end of the 20th century.

Green Day built a cult following and found a foothold in California’s burgeoning punk revival scene, of which they were one of the main engines.

As their career progressed, Green Day received a second Grammy Award for Best Rock Album for ‘21st Century Breakdown’ (2009), another ambitious album release. With global tours and many headliner performances, Green Day cemented themselves as one of the greats.

What Are Green Day’s Most Successful Songs?

Green Day has had many heavy hitters, but here are some of their greatest that echoed angrily around the world.

Boulevard Of Broken Dreams

Released: December 2004

The second single from their hugely successful ‘American Idiot’ album, ‘Boulevard of Broken Dreams’ became one of the band's most well-known songs. Penned by frontman Billie Joe Armstrong, he told MTV in an interview that the song was written in New York and is about, "feeling alone but trying to take power from that".

It's their biggest-selling song in America (where it's reportedly sold over 2 million) and places fifth in the UK, with chart sales of 425,000 and 23.4 million streams.

American Idiot

Released: September 2004

The song that put Green Day back in the centre of the global stage. The lead single and title track from their hit album, ‘American Idiot’ is Green Day at their most explicit, contending that the media has orchestrated mass paranoia and idiocy among the general public in America.

It was controversial, but it sent shockwaves across the music industry - the song was a hit across the world, including the UK, where it landed at Number 3. Interestingly enough, it was also their biggest single in the UK, with 827,000 chart sales, including 51.5 million streams.

Basket Case

Released: August 1994, re-released January 1995

Green Day's fourth biggest seller was the moment they well and truly broke UK records. Basket Case's sharp, ear-snagging lyrics about one's descent into madness can be recited by any punk-rock-raver worth their salt ("Do you have the time/ To listen to me whine/ About nothing and everything all at once?" is surely one of the best opening lines of a punk song ever?).

So sure were they of its hit potential, that it had two cycles on the Official Singles Chart; once in 1994, where it peaked at 55, and again six months later in 1995, where it reached Number 7. To date, its chart sales stand at 761,000, including a massive 52 million streams - their most-streamed song in the UK.

When Did Green Day Last Come to Australia?

In 2021, the Californian trio played four stadium shows in Australia in November with Weezer and Fall Out Boy as part of a ‘The Hella Mega Tour’.

The triple-header ‘The Hella Mega Tour’ was played in Europe, Britain and North America before arriving in Australia, where Green Day performed in Perth, Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane.

Are Green Day Coming to Australia in 2024?

Fans are hopeful, and for good reason. The ‘When We Were Young’ festival was held in Las Vegas in November of this year. It was at this surprise Green Day performance that Billy Joe Armstrong said on stage, 'Big announcement: We’re doing a big tour next year.’

The details of this tour haven’t been officially announced, but a big tour for a band like this usually means something global, with Australia as a top destination.
