Aerosmith Background

Aerosmith formed in 1970 when Steven Tyler met Joe Perry while working at a Sunapee, New Hampshire, ice cream parlor. Shortly thereafter, they met Tom Hamilton. The group soon grew into a quartet, adding a second guitarist named Ray Tabano, though he was quickly replaced by Brad Whitford. With the addition of Joey Kramer, the band was fully formed and Tyler, who had been the drummer, became the full-time lead singer.

After relocating to Boston in 1970, the group cut its teeth on performances in various Boston and New York clubs, until finally securing a record deal in 1972 and releasing their self-titled debut album the year after that. Their first single was "Dream On," which became a major hit and fueled the band's popularity throughout the 1970s.

Biggest Hits

Aerosmith's first No. 1 hit came in 1998, with “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” from the Armageddon soundtrack. This song came on the heels of their comeback tour that started in 1984 and has been called one of the most spectacular and remarkable in all of rock and roll history. Beyond this, Aerosmith is responsible for an extraordinary number of other classic songs. The song most readily associated with them is probably “Sweet Emotion,” which was a Top 40 hit when it was originally released in 1975 and has stood the test of time, appearing on countless movie soundtracks through the years. “Dream On” and “Walk This Way” were two more of their early hits, appearing in 1973 and 1975, respectively. Aerosmith even made a version of “Walk This Way” in collaboration with the hip-hop group Run-D.M.C. in 1986, which also went on to receive great acclaim.

Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Aerosmith produced an impressive list of Top 20 hits, including “Dude (Looks Like a Lady),” “Janie’s Got a Gun,” “Cryin’,” “Crazy” and “Love in an Elevator.” All of these songs have remained fan favorites and mainstays at all, or nearly, all of Aerosmith’s concerts since they were written.

Aerosmith Biggest Concert Tour

The biggest of Aerosmith’s many concert tours was their Nine Lives Tour, which lasted from May 1997 to July 1999. The massive success of “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” was what made the tour so unusually long, but it ended up being a runaway success for the band. On this tour, Aerosmith performed in a wide range of venues throughout Europe. They also played all over North America, as well as in Japan and in the United Kingdom.

Along with Aerosmith — which despite 49 years together as a band is still touring regularly — there are other classic rock bands that are also actively touring today, like Bon Jovi and the Rolling Stones.
