When Did My Chemical Romance Start?

The band My Chemical Romance (MCR for short) was formed in 2001 by lead vocalist, Gerard Way, and drummer, Matt Pelissier, in New Jersey. My Chemical Romance came together shortly after the September 11 attacks. Inspired by the events of that day, Gerard began writing the song "Skylines and Turnstiles" to express his feelings, which would later become My Chemical Romance's first song.

The band's lineup solidified with the inclusion of Ray Toro on lead guitar, Mikey Way (Gerard's younger brother) on bass, and later Frank Iero as the rhythm guitarist.

My Chemical Romance quickly gained popularity in the 2000s, especially within the emo and punk rock scenes, with albums like Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge and The Black Parade. Their music can be classified under the punk rock, alternative rock, pop-punk, hard rock and emo-pop genres – which is why the band appeals to such a wide audience.

Iconic albums 'Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge' and 'The Black Parade', which perfectly capture the band's alternative emo punk-rock sound, continue to provide the soundtrack for a generation. Released in the mid-late 2000s, songs such as "I'm Not Okay", "Helena", "Teenagers" and "Welcome to the Black Parade" are nostalgic staples for fans, with these four songs alone garnering over 1 billion streams on Spotify.

Did My Chemical Romance Break Up?

Yes, My Chemical Romance (MCR) announced their breakup on March 22, 2013. The band released a statement on their official website explaining their decision to disband, though they didn't specify the exact reasons for the split.

However, the story didn't end there. In 2019, MCR announced a reunion. They revealed a return show on December 20, 2019, at the Shrine Expo Hall in Los Angeles, which quickly sold out. Following the success of that performance, they announced more tour dates for 2020, but many of these were postponed or rescheduled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Luckily, the My Chemical Romance Australia tour was not cancelled post-COVID, as many other artists did. MCR resumed their world tour and came to Australia, and fans’ My Chemical Romance tickets did not go to waste.

When Is My Chemical Romance Touring?

My Chemical Romance most recently came to Australia at the beginning of 2023, so it will probably be a while before the band makes their way back down under!

My Chemical Romance’s Australia tour in March was one to remember. From the first note to the last, fans were on their feet, singing along to every song. It was an atmosphere you had to be there to understand. The memories from that tour are still fresh, and while it might be some time before they return, we're all just living in the aftermath of that epic MCR wave.

Who Is Touring With My Chemical Romance?

Since the punk rock band is not currently on tour, there are no other artists or bands touring alongside them. However, MCR never fails to put on an amazing performance with other musicians opening and featuring at their concerts.

At the last My Chemical Romance Australia tour, Jimmy Eat World supported the band as they toured throughout the country. Jimmy Eat World got the crowds hyped up and ready for MCR while they performed their own iconic songs. So, whoever opens or supports My Chemical Romance next is sure to give a killer performance.
