In 1996, the Fitzroy Lions and Brisbane Bears merged to form the Brisbane Lions Club, the first-ever VFL/AFL merger allowed by the AFL. 

The Brisbane Lions were the most successful AFL side of the 2000s, not long after they were founded. In addition to participating in four straight Grand Finals (2001–2004), the Lions defeated the Collingwood Magpies in their second final in 2003 to earn their third consecutive title.
