BLUNDSTONE ARENA AFL 2024 TICKETS

About

Blundstone Arena is located in Bellerive, which is a suburb on Hobart’s eastern shore. The venue is the only one in Tasmania which hosts international cricket matches. It’s the main venue for AFL in the southern half of the Apple Isle. Before being sponsored by Blundstone, the iconic Tasmanian leather boot manufacturer, the Arena was known as Bellerive Oval.

With a total capacity of 19,500, the biggest crowd for an AFL match at Blundstone Arena topped out at 17,844 patrons. That was for a game between the North Melbourne Kangaroos and the Richmond Tigers on the 3rd of June, 2016.

The area where Blundstone Arena now stands has been used for footy and cricket since the mid-to-late nineteenth century. The first football match at this location on record was in 1884, between Carlton and the Bellerive football club. The piece of land where the Arena stands was sold to the Clarence council in 1913, and within a year it was converted into a recreational facility. It became the home of The Clarence Football Club. In 1948, they applied to be part of the Tasmanian Football League (TFL), which meant the ground had to be upgraded to suit their standards. 1960 saw the addition of clubrooms, and a five hundred seat grandstand was implemented in 1963 along with a new PA system.

The whole centre was refurbished yet again after Tasmania was admitted to the prestigious Sheffield Shield cricket competition. In 1977, over two million dollars was spent on grandstands, training nets, a hill, a new surface and centre wicket, and the relocation of the old TCA ground scoreboard. The Members’ Pavilion - a three-level structure - was also built. This refurbishment was completed in 1986. The grounds’ debut match was a TFL clash between Clarence and Hobart. The game completely destroyed the newly laid turf, and there was no more footy on the ground that season!

Sixteen million dollars were poured into the stadium by the Federal Government, TCA, and Clarence City Council in 1999. After hosting a number of high profile cricket competitions, the ground finally got a bit of clout with a naming rights deal in 2011. Blundstone Footwear attached the name ‘Blundstone Arena’, and it’s stuck ever since.

In 2015, another fifteen million dollars from the State Government increased the capacity of the stadium to 20,000. This saw the naming and renaming of two stands - the existing stand was renamed the David Boon Stand and the new one was called the Ricky Ponting Stand.

What AFL Tickets Can I Buy For Blundstone Arena?

Blundstone Arena became the secondary home ground for the North Melbourne Kangaroos in 2010. There was a bit of contention over who would get to call the Arena home turf, and the Richmond Tigers looked like the early favourite. The Roos were keen to play more than two games there, though, so they got the honour. The move has allowed Hobart to have more of a stake in the AFL than they otherwise would, seeing as they don’t have a specific team dedicated to the state.

In 2024, North Melbourne will have 4 home games at Blundstone Arena. They are against Port Adelaide in Round 9, GWS Giants in Round 13, Melbourne Demons in Round 21, and Gold Coast in Round 24.
