The Essendon Bombers are one of the oldest and most popular teams in the AFL, with a record of 16 premierships to their name – matched only by rivals Collingwood and Carlton.

With these additions, expectations are high for their improvement in the 2024 season. However, the extent of their progress may hinge on their fitness, especially considering their lackluster finish in the previous season. Despite being on the verge of the top eight and holding fifth place until Round 17, their percentage was notably subpar. The team anticipates the return of Peter Wright for the majority of the upcoming season after his extended absence this year. While optimism abounds, success in the next season will ultimately depend on effective execution. Failing to make the finals again, given their recent acquisitions, would be a tough outcome to accept.

Despite an initial promising start, the Bombers experienced a significant downturn in performance, managing to win only two more matches for the season against weaker opponents West Coast and North Melbourne. The season concluded on a dismal note with a 126-point loss to GWS and a 12-goal defeat by Collingwood in the final round. While their overall win count increased from seven to 11 compared to the previous year, the notable decline in performance raises concerns about Essendon's improvement in 2023.

In 2024 the biggest games of Essendon's fixture will include, the annual ANZAC day clash between Essendon and Collingwood and the ‘Dreamtime at the G’ game, which has been played between Essendon and Richmond since 2005 to recognize the contribution of indigenous players. It all kicks off against the Hawthorn Football Club in Round 1 on Saturday 16th March at the infamous MCG.
