PEOPLE FIRST STADIUM (FORMELY HERITAGE BANK STADIUM) AFL TICKETS 2024

About

Heritage Bank Stadium (Formerly Metricon Stadium and also known as Carrara Stadium) is a sporting ground located on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It’s the home ground of the Gold Coast Suns, and the whole venue is most commonly used for Australia rules football matches. The stadium does also see some use as a cricket ground, and you’ll often see it come into play during the Big Bash League. The stadium was redeveloped in a big way just before the Brisbane Bears entered the VFL/AFL in 1987. The Bears relocated to the Gabba in 1993, and the stadium was used for rugby (both union and league), and even saw some used as a baseball stadium! Metricon Stadium hosted the opening and closing ceremonies for the Commonwealth Games in 2018, as well as a number of athletic competitions. The 2032 Olympics will be hosted in Brisbane, and if the International Olympic Committee approves it, Metricon Stadium will host Cricket there.

What AFL Tickets Can I Buy For Metricon Stadium?

If you want to see the Gold Coast Suns, Metricon Stadium is the place to be. The Suns have played home games there since 2011. During that period, the government of Queensland chipped in sixty million dollars to see the stadium redeveloped. The capacity shot up to 25000 (including 23500 seats). They were aided by ten million dollars from the AFL and twenty million from the Gold Coast City Council.

After the stadium was reconstructed, the Gold Coast Suns played their first game there on the 28th of May, 2011. It was Round 10 and they lost to the Geelong Cats by 66 points. The Round 18 clash with the Collingwood Magpies (the reigning premiers at the time) sold out two months in advance and attracted a record crowd at the time - 23,202 patrons. It wasn’t until the 11th of August in 2012 that the Suns won a game for the first time at the venue. On that particular Saturday, they bested the GWS Giants by thirty points.

Crowd numbers dipped below 20,000 until Round 12 of the 2014 season. That weekend, 21,354 patrons came to see Gary Ablett Jr. and Lance ‘Buddy’ Franklin go toe-to-toe for the first time since they’d left their original clubs, with Buddy playing for the Swans and Ablett for the Suns. The crowd attendance record previously held by the Magpies/Suns clash in 2011 was smashed in 2014 when 24,032 punters showed up in Round 16 for another battle between the Suns and the Pies. The Suns won this one by five points, even though Gary Ablett was forced to end his season early due to an injury to his shoulder.

This year, fans can expect to see at least nine games at Metricon Stadium.
