LEICHARDT OVAL 2024

About

Leichhardt Oval, located in Lilyfield, New South Wales, serves as a rugby league and soccer stadium. It currently stands as one of the Wests Tigers' three home grounds in the National Rugby League (NRL), alongside Campbelltown Stadium and Western Sydney Stadium. Before the amalgamation with the Western Suburbs Magpies, it was the historic home of the Balmain Tigers from 1934 to 1994 and again from 1997 to 1999. The stadium was named after Ludwig Leichhardt.

Since Balmain's inaugural game against Western Suburbs in Round 1 of the 1934 NSWRFL season on ANZAC Day, Leichhardt Oval has been an active host for rugby league. It holds the distinction, as of July 2012, of being the most utilized Australian professional rugby league ground in the NRL, having witnessed 794 games. Balmain clinched their first victory at the venue during the following game of the 1934 season, defeating University 27-13.

Certainly! Leichhardt Oval has a rich history in rugby league. Initially used as the Balmain Tigers' home ground from 1934, it underwent substantial changes in the 1970s, shifting its field orientation and installing lighting, becoming a preferred venue for night games and non-Balmain matches. Notably, it hosted interstate games between NSW and Queensland before the advent of the State of Origin series. The final match under the old rules in June 1981 saw a competitive clash between NSW and Qld players, attracting around 6,268 spectators. From 1974 to 1986, the ground hosted the NSWRL's mid-week competitions and finals. In August 1985, a record 21,707 fans attended a game between Balmain Tigers and St. George Dragons, later surpassed in 1989 with a turnout of 22,750. After Balmain's departure in 1994, they briefly returned in 1997 before merging to form the Wests Tigers, making Leichhardt Oval one of their home grounds.
