TIO STADIUM DARWIN AFL TICKETS 2024

About

TIO Stadium (also known as Marrara Oval, and previously known as Football Park) is located in Darwin. Having opened in 1991, the ground is home to a number of Australian rules football, cricket, and rugby league matches. With a capacity of 12,500 people, TIO Stadium is the largest stadium in the Northern Territory. That official capacity is quite at odds with its highest attendance record - in 2003, 17,500 people piled in to watch a football game featuring the Indigenous All-Stars.

At least one AFL game has been played at TIO Stadium per season since 2004. The same goes for National Rugby League, but this has only been the case since 2012. Test and One Day International cricket have been played at the ground, although the last time this happened was in 2008.

TIO Stadium’s first AFL match took place in February 1992, a year after opening. 11,000 people came out to watch Collingwood Magpies play the West Coast Eagles in a pre-season fixture as part of the Foster’s Cup. The next decade saw a number of pre-season matches take place at the ground. Indigenous All-Stars matches were of particular significance at the stadium, including the aforementioned 2003 match with its 5000 person attendance overflow.

It wasn’t until Round 20 of the 2004 season that a premiership match was held at TIO Stadium. The Western Bulldogs played a home game against Port Adelaide. The Dogs continued to play a single ‘home’ game each season from 2004 to 2008. In 2010, the Melbourne Demons joined in on the fun, also playing on home game in Darwin each year. The Richmond Tigers took over the Bulldogs fixture in 2011, but the Doggies returned in 2012 and 2013. Port Adelaide had a three-year deal from 2009 to 2012 where they would play an away game at TIO Stadium. Nowadays the Gold Coast Suns have taken Melbourne’s spot, and they play two games a year at TIO Stadium.

TIO Stadium is also the secondary home ground for the AFLW Adelaide Crows team. That’s been the case since 2017. The ground was also the site of the 2020 ‘Dreamtime at the G’ match, though, obviously, it did not take place at the G that year. There was a COVID-19 related lockdown in Victoria at the time, so the game was moved to the Northern Territory.
