What is the Ashes?
The Ashes is a test match between England and Australia, dating back to 1882 when Australia came out Victorious at The Oval. This was a major moment in cricket history, being our first win on British soil. As a result, the British media satirically announced their pledge to “regain those ashes”, coining the name for the particular tour—though it took a number of years for the term to catch one. Taking the banter even further, a group of Melbournians handed the English captain an urn after several wins by our Commonwealth opponents.
The Ashes is a five-test series that takes place every two years, alternating between England and Australia. If the series ends in a draw, the country currently holding the Ashes retains the trophy.
Over the centuries, there have been 72 Ashes series: Australia having won 34, and England 32, though there have been 6 drawn series as well. Being the cricket-loving country that we are, and with a rich history to celebrate, there are a number of cricket grounds in Australia.
In Victoria, there’s the Melbourne Cricket Ground/MCG, in Adelaide: the Adelaide Oval, the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney, Optus Stadium in Perth and Blundstone Arena, Hobart. Women's Ashes grounds in recent years include Manuka Oval, Canberra; North Sydney Oval, Sydney; and Junction Oval, Melbourne. Whichever team you’re batting for at the next tournament, choose Ticket Merchant to get you there; your reliable provider of resold tickets without the risk.
