History of Lord’s Cricket Ground

Lord’s is a cricket ground right in the centre of London, nestled between Baker Street, Warwick Avenue, Marylebone, Edgware Road and St John’s Tube Station. Board the Underground or take a bus along the Ground route. The Ground is owned by Marylebone Cricket Club, which also happens to be the guardian of the Laws of the game. The club was founded in 1787, shortly before taking its home on a ground developed by Thomas Lord, a local entrepreneur. This ground was situated on Dorset Fields in Marylebone, before moving to its current location at St John’s Wood in 1814.

The first game at the prior ground was between Middlesex and Essex. During this period, the cricket club devised a Code of Laws, legislating that the wickets be pitched 22 yards apart and some other regulations around the players. The laws were hence adopted throughout the game and the MCC continue to act as the custodian and arbiter of cricket laws around the world. At the end of his career, Thomas Lord sold the ground to William Ward, the Bank of England director, for over 5000 pounds. The MCC also got involved in county cricket in 1877 and the Middlesex team adopted Lord’s as its country ground. That same year, the Marylebone Cricket club sent an English team to Australia, along with umpire James Lillywhite, to compete in the world’s first Test match.

One of England’s star players was Dr W.G. Grace, a member of the MCC, and is often cited as one of the earliest examples of an English sporting celebrity. His likeness was captured in a painting by Archibald Stuart-Wortley, and still hangs in the club's Long room. In conjunction with the flourishing of cricket on an international scale, along came the Board of Control for Test Matches, the Advisory County Cricket Committee and the Imperial Cricket Conference, all set up to assist the international and domestic cricket industry. All of these bodies reigned over the cricket world until 1968, when changes were made due to the reorganisation of England’s cricket clubs. There’s so much to do at the iconic Lord’s ground. Get close to the players during their training sessions and warm ups at the Nursery Ground; eat, dine and watch one of our famous bell ringers.
