How the Big Bash League matches are structured

Each of the eight clubs plays 10 matches during the regular season, split evenly between five home and five away fixtures. That makes up the 40 Big Bash League matches played between 12 December 2026 and 17 January 2027.

From there, the top teams progress to a four-match finals series, with the Qualifier, Knockout and Challenger leading into the BBL Final on 26 January 2027.

This season marks a competition first. The season opens in Chennai, India, on 12 December, when the Melbourne Renegades take on the Perth Scorchers at MA Chidambaram Stadium in the first BBL match to be played outside Australia.

BBL matches schedule by month

The BBL matches schedule runs across December and January. The New Year has the busiest stretch of the season, with 22 matches played before the finals begin. 

The summer holiday period is particularly packed, with 12 BBL matches scheduled between Boxing Day and 2 January. From there, the regular season continues through to 17 January before the finals get underway two days later. 

The Big Bash matches to look out for in 2026-27 

There are a few dates worth circling on the schedule, from the Melbourne and Sydney derbies to a packed run of cricket over the summer holidays.

Melbourne and Sydney: The Sydney Thunder host the Sixers on 19th December, with the return fixture on 15th January. In Melbourne, the Stars host the Renegades on 4th January before the two sides meet again on 16th January.

Christmas and New Year: There are 12 Big Bash matches scheduled between Boxing Day and 2nd January, making it one of the busiest stretches of the season.

BBL finals: The four-match finals series begins on 19th January and culminates with the BBL Final on 26th January 2027. Teams and host venues will be confirmed based on the final standings.

Chennai season opener: The season begins with a competition first, as the Melbourne Renegades face the Perth Scorchers at MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

How the BBL finals work

The Big Bash regular season finishes on 17 January, with the top teams progressing to a four-match finals series from 19 to 26 January 2027. 

Teams and host venues are determined by the final standings, so the exact matchups and locations won't be known until the regular season is complete. The series culminates with the BBL Final on Australia Day, 26 January 2027.
