What Is the Big Bash League?
The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia's premier Twenty20 cricket competition, renowned for its electrifying and fast-paced cricket action. It began in 2011 and has eight teams, each based in an Australian city. The 2026-27 season is officially the sixteenth season.
Twenty20 is the shortest major format of cricket, with each team batting once for a maximum of 20 overs. Matches typically take around three hours, making the BBL a much shorter format than Test or one-day cricket. The women's competition, the WBBL, is a separate league with its own teams, draw and season.
When it comes to cricket, the Big Bash has become a major part of the Australian summer, bringing together emerging local talent and international players for matches across December and January. The league's success lies in its ability to combine high-quality cricket with an engaging fan experience, making it a cornerstone of Australia's summer sporting calendar.
