The Big Bash League returns for its sixteenth season on 12 December 2026, with the season running through to the Final on 26 January 2027. Eight teams will compete across 40 regular-season matches before the top teams progress to the finals.

The 2026-27 season also makes history, with the first BBL match to be played outside Australia.

What Is the Big Bash League?

The Big Bash League (BBL) is Australia's premier Twenty20 cricket competition, renowned for its electrifying and fast-paced cricket action. It began in 2011 and has eight teams, each based in an Australian city. The 2026-27 season is officially the sixteenth season. 

Twenty20 is the shortest major format of cricket, with each team batting once for a maximum of 20 overs. Matches typically take around three hours, making the BBL a much shorter format than Test or one-day cricket. The women's competition, the WBBL, is a separate league with its own teams, draw and season. 

When it comes to cricket, the Big Bash has become a major part of the Australian summer, bringing together emerging local talent and international players for matches across December and January. BBL 2026-27 Key Dates

The BBL|16 fixtures are confirmed, with the season running from 12 December 2026 through to the Final on 26 January 2027. 

Dates for all four finals are confirmed, with host venues to be determined by the final standings. The season opens in Chennai on 12 December before the first Australian fixture at the Gabba on 15 December.

A Big Bash match is two innings of 20 overs each, and most matches take about three hours from the first ball. Gates usually open well before the start, and the majority of matches are played in the evening.

Four finals are played after the 40 regular-season matches: the Qualifier on 19 January, the Knockout on 20 January, the Challenger on 23 January and the Final on 26 January 2027. Venues are confirmed once the regular season decides which teams finish where.
