Barlow Park, also known as Cairns Sports Centre, was officially inaugurated on December 5, 1987. It has undergone several upgrades, notably the stadium extension that opened on August 13, 2003.

It has been a venue for international athletic events and preseason NRL, Super Rugby, and A-League matches. Oceania Area Championships were held at Barlow Park in 2007, 2010, 2012, and 2015, attracting athletes from across the globe, including Sir Sebastian Coe. In June 2013, a regular season NRL match between South Sydney Rabbitohs and Gold Coast Titans drew a crowd of 16,118, setting a record for the ground. The highest attendance reached 20,000 during a 2004 NRL pre-season match. Additional NRL matches involving the Rabbitohs took place at the ground in 2014, 2015, and 2016.

Moreover, the stadium hosted three matches during the 2017 Rugby League World Cup, including a double-header. It was also the venue for the 2018 Australian All School Athletics Championships.
