FMG STADIUM WAIKATO NRL 2024

About

FMG Stadium Waikato in Hamilton, New Zealand, holds 25,800 people and comprises four sections: Brian Perry Stand (12,000), WEL Networks Stand (8,000), Goal Line Terrace (800), and Greenzone (up to 5,000). The Goal Line Terrace can add 5,000 seats temporarily. Owned by Hamilton City Council, it hosts the Chiefs in Super Rugby and the Waikato team in the Mitre 10 Cup.

FMG Stadium Waikato, primarily utilized for rugby union, stands out as a versatile venue. While many sports fields in New Zealand serve multiple purposes such as rugby union and cricket, this stadium is recognized as one of the premier rectangular stadiums for football-related sports in the country. It serves as the home ground for various teams including the Waikato Mitre 10 Cup team, the Chiefs in the Super Rugby competition, and occasionally hosts international fixtures for the New Zealand All Blacks. Additionally, it has accommodated Waikato FC in the New Zealand Football Championship and has been a venue for FIFA age-group World Cups. Periodically, it has also welcomed matches for the New Zealand Warriors rugby league team in the National Rugby League (NRL). Beyond sports, the stadium offers diverse facilities like the Gallagher Lounge, Bronze Lounge, Genesis Energy Lounge, Radio Sport Lounge, Clarke Lounge, Network Lounge, Boardroom, and TV Commentary Room, catering to private functions and events.

FMG Stadium Waikato, previously called Rugby Park, faced disruptions during the 1981 Springbok Tour when a game against Waikato was canceled due to anti-tour protestors and concerns about a stolen aircraft. Since 2002, it has hosted a wide array of events, including international rugby, Super Rugby, football matches, cultural events, and tournaments like the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup in 2008. Notably, it saw the historic victory of the New Zealand Māori Rugby Union Team over the British & Irish Lions in 2005. Over the years, the stadium has held Rugby World Cup matches, Super Rugby Finals, and hosted rugby league test matches and the New Zealand Sevens. In 2023, it's set to be a venue for the FIFA Women's World Cup, hosting multiple matches including the inter-confederation play-offs.
