The Barty party was in full swing last week at Wimbledon, as Australian sporting icon, Ashleigh Barty, picked up her second major title at the All England Championships. 

In a historic win, Barty defeated world No.7 Karolina Pliskova, two-sets-to-one, to become the first Australian tennis player to win the women’s singles title at Wimbledon since her idol Evonne Goolagong Cawley in 1980. 

Barty, who is of Ngarigo heritage, also became the second indigenous Australian to win the tournament after Cawley, providing a fitting crescendo to the end of Australia’s NAIDOC Week celebrations. 


It was a hugely proud moment for everyone across Australia, and as Barty has emphasised before the importance of her family, she immediately started to climb the gantries of Centre Court to embrace her family and coaching staff as countryman Pat Cash did 34 years ago. 

“Being able to live out my dream right now, with everyone here, has made it better than I ever could have imagined,” Barty told the Wimbledon crowd after the match. 

"I hope I made Evonne proud," she said, receiving rapturous applause from the crowd. 

Having dropped just two sets on her way to the final, Barty’s performance over the tournament was something to behold and has now put even more distance between herself and Naomi Osaka at the top of the WTA rankings. 

She was clinical, composed, and exploded into each match, notably powering past Pliskova in the finals to secure three break points and win the opening four games. 


But Pliskova, whose last victory on the WTA Tour came in Brisbane in 2020, wasn’t going down without a fight. The Czech forced her opponent to an eleven point tie break in the second, and drew level with Barty an hour and 30 minutes into the match. 

Although there was little she could do to halt the brilliance of Barty in the final set, the world No.1 showed her full arsenal of skills to break the Czech and dispatch an acute-angled forehand into Pliskova’s court to win the final 6-3 6-7 6-3.  

Incredibly, Barty has now won 19 of her last 22 matches against top 20 opposition, having only lost to Aryna Sabalenka in the Madrid Open final in May. She is also the fourth woman in the open era to win both the Wimbledon junior singles title in 2011 and now the ladies’ championship ten years later.  

Barty has now won 12 WTA Titles since she returned from her hiatus from tennis in 2016, where she swapped her racket for a cricket bat and started playing for the Brisbane Heat in the Women’s Big Bash League. 

The world No.1 was also a doubt to compete at Wimbledon this year, after being forced to retire at the second round of last month’s French Open with a hip injury. She revealed after the final that “being able to play here at Wimbledon was nothing short of a miracle.”

"There weren't too many radiologists in Australia who had seen my injury. In a sense, it was a two-month injury.”

But this win is a testament to her character, sweeping her way through the tournament to beat a raft of tough opposition, including current last month’s French Open champion Barbora Krejčíková and three-time grand slam champion and 2018 Wimbledon champion Angelique Kerber in the semi-finals. 

She also bested fellow Australian Ajla Tomljanovic in the quarter-finals, who will also return to Australia as a hero, having reached a career-high finish at a grand slam. 

The future is certainly looking bright for Tennis Australia.
