About

In the 2023 NRL season, the South Sydney Rabbitohs, under Jason Demetriou's coaching and led by Cameron Murray, had their 114th season but fell short of the finals. Despite leading the competition after eleven rounds, they became the first team since the top 8 finals system's introduction to miss the finals. Initially strong, they stumbled post-Origin and missed the finals for the first time since 2017. With a challenging start and a break coming up in Round 7, they aimed to rebound and secure a finals spot in 2024 after a tough season.

Last season, Souths faced disappointment, and without improvements in their spine performance and two key areas of their game, they might face similar challenges in 2024. The team, led by Lachlan Ilias and Cody Walker, needs a better kicking game. There's a call for Latrell Mitchell to step up and take more responsibility in guiding the team, as Jack Wighton's arrival alone won't solve their return to the finals.

Following a review of their coaching, Souths made changes, parting ways with Sam Burgess and John Morris. Jason Demetriou's contract was extended until 2026, and assistant coach Ben Hornby also signed an extension until 2025. Joe O'Callaghan transitioned into a full-time NRL Assistant Coach role while retaining his position as NSW Cup Coach. Club legend John Sutton also took on a full-time role as a Development Coach, working with O'Callaghan and nurturing the club's emerging talent.
