NRL TEAMS

About

Last year’s NRL season ended with a stand-off between the Penrith Panthers and the South Sydney Rabbitohs, with the Panthers pulling off a two-point victory in front of a 39,000-person-strong crowd at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium. What will this year’s season hold?

2021 ended with the Melbourne Storm at the top of the ladder, but they were brought low in the finals and couldn’t make it to the final dance. 2022 might be a year of redemption for them, another chance to pull the rabbit out of the hat and secure themselves another big trophy for their ever-growing collection.

The Manly Sea Eagles were in fourth, after the grand-finalist Panthers and Rabbitohs, and you can be sure they’re hungry to topple those giants in the season to come. The Eels, Knights, and Titans made up the remainder of the finals positions, and you can bet your bottom dollar that every last one of them will be vying for a place improvement when September rolls around.

And what of the underdogs? The Bulldogs have a long way to crawl back from 16th position, and the Cowboys aren’t too far ahead. They ended last year tied with the Broncos when it comes to points, making 2021 a pretty sad year for the Queensland rivals. Will 2022 be the year that they return to form, or are they destined to float around the bottom for another season?

All will be revealed as things tick along - the draft is bound to cause all kinds of upsets, and nothing is ever guaranteed in the mighty game we called Rugby League. With injuries, altercations, and even the odd scandal bound to pop up along the way, who’s to say who The Provan-Summons Trophy will go to by year’s end.

It’s anyone’s game, and it’s anyone’s guess. One thing’s for certain, though: you’ll want to be along for the ride. No matter who you support, get along to a game or two (or three…or ten) this year and enjoy the spirit of NRL in full force.
