About

The 2023 season marked the St. George Illawarra Dragons' 25th year in the NRL, competing under the leadership of Captain Ben Hunt and Head Coach Anthony Griffin, who was replaced by Ryan Carr before round 8. Unfortunately, it was a turbulent season with multiple setbacks. Starting with Junior Amone's arrest during pre-season, the team faced more off-field challenges than on-field victories. Griffin's departure added to the drama, and the mid-season request by Ben Hunt to leave added further strain, forcing the club into damage control. Despite the chaos, Shane Flanagan's arrival as head coach offers hope for a turnaround. Nonetheless, the year was a struggle, with the Dragons narrowly avoiding finishing at the bottom, a commendable feat considering their challenging season.

There wasn't much to celebrate initially for St. George Illawarra, but their impressive four-week run following Griffin's departure provided a glimmer of hope. Shortly after Griffin's dismissal, they triumphed 24-22 over the Roosters in a thrilling match at Kogarah. Then, during the State of Origin period, they secured a 36-30 victory against the Rabbitohs. Although they fell short against the Panthers and battled hard against the reigning premiers during that stretch, their success dwindled under Carr's leadership. They managed only one win thereafter—a close victory against the Tigers—that spared them from finishing last.
