GABBA TICKETS 2024

About

The Gabba is one of Australia's most prominent sports stadiums. Officially known as the Brisbane Cricket Ground, the Gabba is located in the capital of Queensland. Specifically, it’s in the suburb of Woolloongabba, which is where it gets its name. The Gabba is a versatile and popular venue for all kinds of sporting events. You can find soccer, rugby league and union, cycling, cricket, baseball, concerts, athletics, and most importantly, AFL played there. In 2032, the Summer Olympics will be at the Gabba! The Gabba is the home ground for the Brisbane Lions.

A six stage redevelopment went on at the Gabba between 1993 and 2005. It cost over $125-million and expanded the field up to 170x149 metres. 42,000 people could fit in the stadium in 2010, but that number has gone down recently with the introduction of corporate boxes and high-tech scoreboards. When the Gabba gets upgraded for the 2032 Olympics, its capacity will reach 50,000! The standard capacity for an AFL match these days is 37,478.

The Gabba has a fairly long history of hosting Australian football matches. The Queensland Football League (later AFL Queensland, or AFLQ) played there intermittently from 1905 to 1971. Once AFL matches got going, AFLQ games were played beforehand as a way to excite the crowd. The Gabba was also used during the 1982 Commonwealth Games to host a demonstration game, showing the rest of the Commonwealth what AFL is all about.

The first VFL/AFL game was in 1981, when the Hawks hosted the Bombers for a crowd of more than twenty thousand people. The Brisbane team (then known as the Bears) started playing home matches at the Gabba in 1991, and made the full transition from their previous home venue of Carrara Stadium in 1993. It’s been Brisbane’s home venue ever since. They set their attendance record for an AFL match in the second qualifying final of 2019, squeezing in 37,473 people to watch the Lions versus the Richmond Tigers.

The Gabba was pretty busy during 2020. Queensland’s relative safety from the COVID-19 pandemic in comparison to Victoria and other parts of Australia meant that a number of clubs were relocated. The ground saw more than its fair share of matches, and the Gabba even wound up hosting the 2020 AFL Grand Final! This made the ground the first venue outside of Victoria where an AFL Grand Final was played. Richmond went toe-to-toe with Geelong and walked away with a thirty point victory in front of over twenty-nine thousand people.

What AFL Tickets Can I Buy For The Gabba?

Round 4 promises some excitement between the Lions and their fiercest rivals, the Collingwood Magpies. The Round 16 clash between the Lions and the Tigers is also likely to be one for the ages.
