MCG AFL TICKETS 2024

About

The Melbourne Cricket Ground is Australia’s most iconic sports stadium. Located in Yarra Park, Melbourne, it is commonly referred to as ‘the MCG’, or, more simply, ‘The G’. The stadium was founded by the Melbourne Cricket Club (MCC), which it continues to be managed by today. The MCG is the largest stadium in the Southern Hemisphere, and the eleventh largest stadium in the world. It is also the second-largest cricket ground when measured in terms of capacity.

Don’t let its name fool you - the Melbourne Cricket Ground is far more frequently used for AFL. Australian rules football brings in a lot more money than any other sport that is played at the MCG. In the early days of the ground, MCC members took issue with the fact that playing footy might ruin the ground for the cricket players. Football games were played just next door to the ground, in the parklands, in an attempt to preserve the playing surface. The first documented match of Australian rules football, between Melbourne Grammar and Scotch College, was played across three separate Saturdays in 1858 and took place in this very area.

It took eleven years from that fateful first game until an AFL match took place on the MCG proper. It took ten more years after that for the Victorian Football Association to form, and an official match was played on the MCG. Electric lights had only just been invented, and two night matches were played in 1879.

The Melbourne Cricket Ground was initially home to the Melbourne Football Club. Melbourne is Australia’s oldest club. Thomas Wills established the club in 1858, and he was the founder of the game altogether. During the 1870s, with the MCG as its home ground, the Melbourne Football Club won five premierships.

In 1897 the first VFL/AFL games were played. On the fifteenth of May, Melbourne beat Geelong by 44 points. This was the first of what has since climbed to nearly three thousand VFL/AFL games.

Nowadays it’s not just Melbourne who uses the Melbourne Cricket Ground as their home ground. Richmond, Carlton, Essendon, Collingwood, and Hawthorn also use the MCG as home turf. Melbourne also used the ground for training, until 1984, when more teams began playing their home games there as well and they needed to preserve the surface.
