AAMI PARK NRL 2024

About

AAMI Park is the sponsorship-mandated name for the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium. Located in Melbourne’s Sports and Entertainment Precinct, the stadium was completed in 2010 and stands on Edwin Flack Field. This was the first large rectangular stadium built for rugby and soccer games that Melbourne had ever been home to.

Docklands Stadium and the Melbourne Cricket Ground were the two biggest stadiums up until this one came along. Olympic Park was the biggest rectangular pitch until AAMI Park came along, but that was originally built as a venue for track and field.

AAMI Park is home to the Melbourne Storm NRL team, as well as the Melbourne Rebels, a Super Rugby team. From 2010 to 2014 the ground hosted Four Nations matches for rugby league, and it was the 2017 Rugby League World Cup venue. The first event that the stadium ever hosted was the 2010 rugby league ANZAC Test. Hazem El Masri, the NRL’s all-time highest point-scorer, kicked a goal during the opening ceremony.

This was especially impactful given that El Masri had retired the year before. Jamie Lyon holds the honor of scoring the first points at AAMI Park. A penalty kick in minute thirty-two of the game sealed that laurel for him. The first try went to Brett Morris seven minutes later. The game resulted in a win for Australia over New Zealand.

The crowd was a sell-out, and the score was 12-8. Two days after this match, the first NRL match took place at AAMI Park. Melbourne Storm suffered a defeat at the hands of the Brisbane Broncos, on their brand new home turf in front of twenty thousand people.

As well as rugby, the Melbourne Rectangular Stadium is fitted out to provide a venue for soccer games. It’s the home turf of Melbourne Victory FC and Melbourne City FC, both A-League teams. During the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, AAMI Park operated as one of the five venues, for the opening match, six others, and a quarter-final. In 2023, AAMI Park played host to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Starting in March, brace yourself for six thrilling matches across three lively days at a remarkable venue. All 12 teams will gather at the sporting hub for round 2 of Super Rugby Pacific 2024, complete with an exciting fan festival, delicious food trucks, and meet-and-greet sessions - ensuring a truly spectacular round.
